Supreme Court’s Committee for Monitoring of Shelter Homes for Urban Homeless in Uttar Pradesh

Progressive Foundation is, on behalf of civil society, a part of Honorable Supreme Court of India’s monitoring committee for shelters for urban homeless in Uttar Pradesh. We are working with the UP Government, National Urban Livelihood Mission, State Urban Development Agency, district authorities and municipalities to ensure –

(1) The State Government builds adequate shelter homes as per the Supreme Court’s guidelines for the homeless people

(2) The shelter homes are run, maintained and occupied as per guidelines.

One of the challenges we face is that, in many cities, occupancy of the shelter homes is very low while a large number of homeless people sleep in the open sky in those areas. Our team, most significantly, Siddharth Kamannavar, conducted surveys and researches, and came up with a number of suggestions which helped us in bringing the needy people to the shelter homes.
